How to choose a casino game: edge, pace and volatility

Three numbers decide what a game costs you: the house edge per bet, the number of bets per hour and the volatility, which decides how bumpy the ride is. Know all three before you choose.

Then check the rules of the exact table or slot. The same game can have a different edge at the next table.

Pace and volatility

A 2.7% edge at 40 spins an hour costs less than a 1% edge at 300 hands an hour. High-volatility slots pay rarely and big; with a small budget, they run out faster even at the same RTP.

Match the game to you

  • Want simple rules: roulette, baccarat, slots.
  • Want to use skill: blackjack, video poker.
  • Small budget: low minimum stakes and low volatility.
  • Playing with a bonus: games that count 100% toward wagering, usually slots.

Check the rules

Open the game's help screen. Look for the payout on blackjack (3:2 or 6:5), single or double zero on roulette, the paytable on video poker and the RTP on slots. Our RTP guide explains the figures.

Responsible gaming

Play only if you are 18+ and it stays fun

These rules apply on every page of this site. A young casino has less history to judge it by, so the limits matter more.

18+ only

Adults only, everywhere

You must be 18 or older, and older in some countries. A casino can ask for ID before your first withdrawal, and new casinos often do.
